M-commerce? Dude, WTF?

Maybe I have been living under a rock for a few months… I got married, moved, started a couple of new business adventures, and anyone who keeps an eye on this blog knows I’ve not been the most active blogger on the web for a while… but seriously?

M-commerce?

This term showed up in one of my mailboxes today as a term adopted by a media metrics company, referring to the act of buying something using a Smartphone. Now, to me, the only way this is “M” commerce instead of “E” commerce is if the phone is the ONLY way you can make your purchase. Using an E-commerce site from your phone doesn’t necessarily constitute a totally different method of purchase. In my opinion, an “M” commerce purchase would consist of buying an applet that only runs on my phone. I guess buying those add-ons for my PS3 would be called P-commerce? Or maybe C-commerce (for “console”).

Let’s not forget that E stands for electronic. Even when your fridge starts ordering groceries for you using your home network and internet connection, it will still be E-commerce.
